August 29, 2008 News in Review
It’s National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, and News in Review would like to say “Thanks” to every trucker out there on the road and at the docks, driving through the night, the rain and snow, hurrying to get supplies to people whose homes have been lost in disaster and getting food to the dinner table for us all. . Thanks, everybody. You are what American Rig Radio is all about.
A News in Review reporter was at the 10th Anniversary of The Great American Trucking Show just completed in Dallas last week, walking the show floor with 600 exhibits and booths and an estimated 50,000 people attending. Probably the biggest highlight was
the world premiere of “Drive and Deliver,” the new movie about truck drivers, and for an opinion of that, check out FleetOwner Senior Editor Sean Kilcarr’s Trucks At Work blog: Kilcarr said: The LoneStar (in my humble opinion) is completely upstaged by drivers Tim “Shoestring” Young, Chris “Discount” LeCount, and Steven “Stingray” Donaldson. [Director Brett] Morgen does an absolutely brilliant job letting them tell their stories, relating the high and lows of piloting a big rig for a living. Now, sure, there’s plenty of lavish praise heaped on the LoneStar (it IS a commercial after all) and more beauty shots than I can count, but it’s the character of the drivers that really resonates throughout the film.
Next we’ll round up the news stories for you: a safety director was nailed for a false drivers’ logbook scam; so-called ‘market corrections’ are affecting the trucking industry; , a small motor carrier owner is making ‘home brew’ to run his truck; a look at 3rd Party logistics in China and an American firm buys into trucking there too; Two major players in the American Trucking Associations have signed letters of intent with the Port of Los Angeles; Japanese truck drivers staged a major protest over costs; Shipping Digest looked at the Transportation Security Administration as the office was looking at security in the trucking industry; and TransCore just launched a new system that could have quite an impact on those same security issues for the trucking industry. Lastly, we’ll answer the last Truckin’ Trivia question and give you another to think about.
Truckin’ Trivia
Finally, your last Truckin’ Trivia question was: America’s desert regions cover most of five different states. Name the states: those states are: You'll need to listen to find out the answers.....
Now for a different type of Truckin’ Trivia question: Congress may be considering a national maximum speed limit. If the House of Representatives bill H.R. 6458 passed and became law, what would be the speed limit per hour on the portions of the National Highway System located outside of urban areas?
