The First Goodyear Highway Hero

It’s been twenty-five years since Goodyear started the Highway Hero Award to recognize uncommon valor shown by a truck driver. During that time, men and women truckers have been saluted for their bravery and concern for other human beings, rushing right into a life-threatening situation without thinking about the danger.

Ronnie Stapleton didn’t think about danger either, and he became the very first Highway Hero. Just another truck driver from Beckley, West Virginia, is probably how Ronnie Stapleton would describe himself. He had a regular run hauling ammunition from the manufacturing plants to military bases.

It was on one of those usual runs, just outside Arkansas in the wee hours of the morning, when he saw a car on fire beside the deserted road. At 3 a.m., Stapleton first assumed someone had deliberately set the blaze, but as he slowed down to pass it, he realized the back-up lights were still on, flickering. That told him someone was still in the car. So even though it was illegal for him to stop because of his load of explosive material, he pulled the rig over, parked, and ran back to help.....
